In the run up to the new football season we recorded a few pilots for possible future podcasts. Some are OK, some aren’t and we have to have a rethink, but a few are truly great! David Edgar’s Glasgow Rangers podcast is one of those.

So good was it that we released the pilot episode, stuck it on iTunes and BANG – it went to Number 1 in the Sports chart within six hours! Not only that, in the overall UK podcast chart it’s up at Number 8 now, looking down on the likes of Chris Evans, Chris Moyles and Stephen Fry. We’ve had chart toppers before, but without doubt this is the fastest rising new podcast we’ve had yet!

Hear it yourself on iTunes, or RSS or visit the Twitter and Facebook pages or get all the links at IbroxRocks.com.

Playback Media announces the preliminary squad for the much anticipated World Cup football podcast, set to debut on June 2nd 2010

It’ll Go To Penalties – The World Cup Podcast is a 35 minute light entertainment podcast available on iTunes three times a week discussing the highlights, the history, games to come and taking a daily punt on who will win next and who might go all the way. A five minute preview was released on April 29th and shot to Number 2 in the iTunes chart, anticipation is so high.

The podcast will be hosted by a panel of three football mad celebrities, with a revolving host format discussing the tournament’s highlights (hair always plays a big part in every World Cup) and events on and off the pitch as they unfold to its exciting finale in July.

Our esteemed panellists from the world of comedy and entertainment include;

Phil Cornwell – presenter of the Spurs Show and winner of two EPL Awards this year, as voted by members of the public.

Paul Whitehouse – the Fast Show comic genius is a regular contributor on Playback’s Spurs Show.

Eamonn Holmes – fanatical Manchester United fan and GMTV favourite and presenter of Sky Morning News.

Nick Frost – one of Britain’s favourite comedy actors Hot Fuzz, Tintin and most recently BBC2 drama ‘Money’.

Omid Djalili – star of the hit film The Infidel and his own BBC comedy series The Omid Djalili Show.

Kriss Akabusi – will surprise everyone with his deep tactical knowledge but no one will mistake his 100 decibel laugh!

Sam Delaney – editor of Heat Magazine and regular contributor to Stop! Hammer Time, the West Ham podcast.

Paul Hawksbee – of Talksport’s Hawksbee and Jacobs afternoon show and writer on Harry Hill’s TV Burp.

Phil Whelans – host of Stop! Hammer Time and one third of sketch group Pros from Dover.

Michael Smiley – Belfast born stand up and actor recently seen in those Betfair Front Room commercials.

DJ Tayo – from Playback’s Number 1 Arsenal podcast, It’s Up For Grabs Now.

Iain Coyle – Presenter, Writer and Producer of Big Brothers Big Mouth.

Paul Tonkinson – ex XFM Breakfast Show Presenter and C4’s Big Breakfast Show- one of the country’s top stand up comics.

Playback Media was founded by London talent agent and Spurs Show co-presenter Mike Leigh and Internet entrepreneur Paul Myers and produces five, iTunes Top 20 football themed podcast titles.

In the inaugural >2008-09 EPL Awards, The Spurs Show won the Best EPL Club Podcast category (and received an Editor’s Choice award in the same category). In that same year, Phil Cornwell won the Best EPL Podcast Presenter award, too.

In the 2009-10 EPL Awards, The Spurs Show won an Editor’s Choice award in the Best EPL Club Podcast category and won the Best EPL Podcast Presenter award – for the second year in a row.

Myers sums up the Playback formula for success, “Our podcasts are not about football. They’re about being a fan. Football is the background music, but the common theme that runs through all our podcasts is that shared experience of being the fan of a club and going through the same emotional experience as our presenters, at the same time. And it helps that they’re very, very funny too”.

Playback’s Arsenal podcast ‘It’s Up For Grabs Now’ presented by Alan Davies is a regular Number 1 podcast on the iTunes chart since it’s debut in 2009.

Mike Leigh comments, “Bringing the presenters from our other podcasts together for It’ll Go To Penalties is akin to playing our international team. We’re fielding our best squad and taking on the best of the rest. Our aim is another iTunes Number 1 podcast”.

The podcast will be accompanied by a free iPhone application developed by application partner BAPPZ, specifically to deliver the podcast to listeners without them having to return to their PC to update their iPhone. It also delivers live World Cup news and results from a number of online sources including The Guardian and the BBC and enables the audience direct email access to the show while they are listening to it.

Playback Media are now seeking headline sponsors and partners for the ‘It’ll Go To Penalties’ podcast joining sports bookmaker Paddy Power, already confirmed to continue their successful association with Playback Media’s podcasts. Sponsors will benefit from unique promotional opportunities, beyond traditional radio advertising, allowing product to be discussed within the fabric of the show and supported with online communication through the podcast’s Facebook and Twitter pages and the iPhone app.
